Craniosacral Therapy

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a hands-on therapy which assists the body's natural capacity for self-repair. Whilst laying on a treatment couch, the practitioner's hands 'listen' via light touch to what your body needs and helps to relieve the pain and tension held there.

In Craniosacral Therapy it is your sub-conscious body rather than your conscious mind that indicates where to treat. This means that the main reason why you came for treatment may not be the first thing to change.

Usually a series of treatments will allow you to gain the full benefit of Craniosacral due to this accumulative effect.

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle approach developed from discoveries about the body's physiology, made by osteopaths in the USA around 100 years ago. These findings show that all cells in the body express a rhythmic movement which is fundamental to life - and which has been called Craniosacral Motion. This rhythm is so subtle that it is barely measurable with instruments, but a trained therapist is able to sense it.

How does Craniosacral Therapy work?

Our tissues contract as a result of physical or emotional stress. When shock is severe or accompanied by strong emotions, they may stay contracted and lose the ability to relax, causing pain, tension and discomfort.

Trauma, stress and strains that remain in the body restrict its ability to function properly and may result in long term problems. The abnormalities in the body cause the Craniosacral Motion to be disturbed. Craniosacral Therapists are trained to feel and release these restrictions. The therapist uses his/her hands to amplify the rhythmic movement, giving the body an opportunity to release and relax back to its normal status. The resulting release gives greater ease to both the body and emotions.

Who can Craniosacral therapy help?

As the treatment process is very gentle, Craniosacral is suitable for all ages and condition, right from newborn, through pregnancy and also for the elderly. Craniosacral is especially effective for both mother and baby after a long or traumatic labour.
